Fatima's Journey from Biochemist in Lebanon to Reading Inter

Coming to America

My story began five years ago, following the revolution in Lebanon. As the currency collapsed and the country faced a severe economic crisis, my family and I made the life-changing decision to move to the United States in search of a new beginning. We wanted to provide our children with the opportunities and resources they deserved for a better, more successful future. Starting over in a new country—especially during the COVID-19 pandemic—wasn’t easy. But with resilience, hope, and the support of strong, incredible women I met along the way, the path became not only manageable but deeply meaningful. I began working as a substitute teacher in Dearborn Public Schools and soon after took on a long-term special education position.

First Time Teaching

That’s when I was introduced to We Shall Read and completed the free Brain Friendly Reading training in winter 2022. I immediately began implementing the program with my students—and the results were remarkable. Some of my students made 2–3 years’ worth of academic growth in just one school year. Because of the incredible progress my students made, my principal trusted me to return and continue supporting students at Geer Park Elementary for another year. That trust meant everything—it was a sign that my work was making a real impact.

Joining the WSR Team

Kristin Dwyer, the founder and Executive Director of We Shall Read, believed in me and gave me the incredible opportunity to join the WSR team. I started by providing translation services and assisting, then I became a mentor for new trainees and finally a training facilitator.  In 2024, I had the honor of leading the WSR station at the Dearborn Summer Market in partnership with Dearborn Public Library. It was a joy to work alongside the library team to support literacy and bring fun into the learning process.

At WSR, we use games and engaging, explicit teaching methods to make learning not just effective, but exciting. Our station quickly became a favorite! Families returned throughout the summer bringing friends.

This summer, I’m honored to be lead parent workshops in Arabic and continuing to support families at the Summer Market. This journey has been more than a career—it’s a mission and a testament to what’s possible when people believe in one another and lift each other up.

What is Has Meant to Me

We Shall Read gave me free training and certification as a BFR Interventionist enabling me to launch my own tutoring business. With the extra income I earned through We Shall Read and tutoring, I was able to achieve something I once thought was out of reach. I bought a home for my family. It was a proud and emotional moment—a symbol of how far I'd come.

I still teach full-time and am incredibly grateful for all the strong women who believed in me—from the visionary Kristin Dwyer and the entire We Shall Read team, to my supportive principal at Geer Park. I’m also thankful for my wonderful Geer Park family, especially the fifth-grade team, who I proudly support every day.

Tips for Tutors!
