Impact

Each winter semester, WSR comes to the Dearborn Public Library and trains up to 30 community members on how to use the Brain Friendly Reading program.  This 12-week, 30-hour training prepares them to be highly-skilled reading tutors.  

Teachers across the Cornerstone school system have received 3-30 hours of training in the science of reading and how to build a child's capacity to read and spell sound by sound leading to reading phrases and sentences and books with fluency and comprehension.  WSR is providing classroom demonstration lessons K-5 for two elementary schools adopting a Brain Friendly Reading approach. 

WSR supports the Music & Literacy in the park summer-long events hosted be the DRC.  We Shall Read trains their volunteers and provides on-site support working with children and families giving them games to play for summer-time learning fun!

WSR has trained hundreds of teachers and interventionists in the district to use Brain Friendly Reading to move children up the ladder of reading.  This includes: Special Education, Classroom Teachers, and Teachers of English Language Learners. Data shows unprecedented gains across instructional settings.

WSR is currently providing a 30-hour training for teachers K-5.  Each session teachers learn more instructional strategies that they can bring to their students to improve not only their reading skills but also their spelling skills in whole group and small group instruction. 

One teacher from Cass City, MI took the MentorMe! program. She went back to her district and implemented a wildly successful tutoring program.  In 2024 she became an in-house trainer for her district and is now supporting dozens of adults impacting hundreds of children's lives.
