Positions Available as of 4/25/25

Program Specialist: Pontiac, Michigan, and Surrounding Communities

OVERVIEW:  The role requires a broad set of skills across multiple disciplines for training and mentoring adult learners who work or volunteer in non-profit spaces as well as adult learners who want to become reading tutors.  The role will require the applicant to creatively implement the BFR program in a variety of non-profit spaces while training on-site staff and volunteers. The applicant will also support program evaluation and educational outreach activities. It is essential that the applicant have a deep understanding of the Brain Friendly Reading program and the science of reading and/or is willing to be trained and engage in a process of continual professional development.  


PREREQUISITE:  Completed or willing to complete the 30-hour training offered through We Shall Read  


DETAILED DESCRIPTION: 

  • Foster new partnerships in collaboration with the Executive Director and fellow WSR team members 
  • Develop positive relationships with WSR non-profit partners 
  • Collaborate with partnering organizations and WSR team members to find creative solutions for implementing the Brain Friendly Program 
  • Lead program implementation with partnering organizations  
  • Through extensive modeling, train staff and volunteers in program implementation; develop a productive mentoring relationship 
  • Initially assist and eventually lead professional development sessions for staff and volunteers specific to each organizations needs 
  • Engage in innovating program implementation across a variety of organizations 
  • Conduct screening of students to assess growth when appropriate 
  • Participate in the WSR Train-the-Trainer program to develop professional development skill set 
  • Participate in WSR internal professional development mentoring as well as Brain Friendly Reading program skill development 

Positions Available as of 4/25/25

Program Specialist: Detroit, Michigan, Police Athletic League and/or Freedom House Women's Shelter

OVERVIEW:  The role requires a the applicant to work directly creatively implementing key portions of the Brain Friendly Reading program with groups of children in non-profit spaces.  At Detroit PAL that looks like 10-minutes or less at the beginning of a practice.  At Freedom House that is TBD.  In addition, the applicant will be providing on the job modeling/training for the organizations staff and volunteers and potentially conducting brief parent workshops on key strategies. It is essential that the applicant know the basics of the Brain Friendly Reading program.


TIMING:  Whenever the sports programs meet through the PALs Pilot Project from May-August 2025 and TBD with Freedom House


OPPORTUNITY:  WSR is seeking additional partnerships in Detroit; Indicate in your cover letter which location (PALs or Freedom House or both) that you are interested in being consider for; indicate interest in future opportunities if desired

  • Participate in WSR internal professional development mentoring as well as Brain Friendly Reading program skill development
